About equal pay

In a modern society, equal work must be paid equally. In the Republic of Moldova, although the law prohibits pay discrimination, differences still exist: on average, women earn about 16% less than men for work of comparable value.

Why do differences appear?

What does pay equality mean?

Pay equality means that women and men receive equal pay for equal work or for work of equal value, regardless of gender.

Equal work

Work performed within the same positions, according to the same educational, professional and training requirements, competencies (skills), effort, responsibility, activity carried out, the nature of the tasks involved and working conditions.

Work of equal value

Work performed in different positions or roles but considered to be of equal value based on the same educational, professional and training requirements, competencies, effort, responsibility, activity carried out, the nature of the tasks involved and working conditions.

What does the Law say?

Law no. 107/2022 introduces obligations regarding the assurance of equal pay for work of equal value, pay transparency, the right of employees to request information and the annual reporting of gender differences, marking an important step in aligning legislation with international standards.

Why does it matter?

The pay gap does not only refer to situations where two people are paid differently for the same job, but to a wider structural imbalance that accumulates over an entire career and ultimately is reflected in pensions as well.
